Disaster

Preparedness

Ananses are encouraged to adopt the culture of saving starting with a money box in the house (individual) and a school Ananse Account. The accounts shall be run by the Ananses themselves and only drawn upon after a national Ananse appeal has been made. There shall be a guarantee that every Ananse is cushioned should he or she fall into any disaster, whether personal or community-wide.

Every Ananse will be required to train once a year in simple 1st Aid. They will also be trained in life-saving skills according to vulnerabilities that exist in their areas e.g. bushfire management for children living in dry areas and swimming skills in areas with water bodies and relevant life-saving skills in flood prone areas. All Ananses will be trained in what to do when their parents faint or fall into other emergency situations. This is expected to reduce fatalities in the homes and communities when disasters occur. Disasters to be planned for shall include health epidemics, floods, earthquakes, domestic and bush fires, storms etc.

Response

Ananse Reach Concept shall act swiftly within 24 hours (through the closest membership) to assess the effects of any disaster that may occur and inform the national body immediately. As an immediate measure an appeal shall be made and the Ananse Disaster Preparedness Account shall be drawn to prevent any further suffering whilst all Ananses will start mobilising other resources e.g. old clothing, bedding materials etc to reduce the vulnerabilities amongst their peers and their families. During the pilot phase, it was evident that children were in the best position to readily and swiftly respond to the needs of affected children during disasters and other emergencies.  Click here for a brief report.

Children readily have outgrown clothes and other items like blankets, bed nets, bed sheets etc and this can be mobilised swiftly. Most importantly, there are always children close to those affected and as an emergency response, resources mobilised form these children will mitigate immediately the effects whilst relief items from other children further away will be under transportation.
